According to Vickers, super-hydrophobic coatings are ideal for sisal fibers.  They form an imperceptible layer of air that makes them extremely difficult to wet since they cause liquids to form beads that sit on the fiber's surface, he said.  Since these little beads are not absorbed by the rug fibers, they are easily wiped away. "Based on our tests comparing it with other products in the marketplace, we have found that our sisal stain repellant provides more water, oil, and stain repellency. Sisal carpets and rugs have become increasingly popular because of their beauty, strength and durability, according to Vickers.  Sisal fibers can be up to three feet long and are sustainably harvested by hand from the leaves of the cactus plant. Sisal is not the same fiber as coir or jute.  "However," Vickers explained, "sisal fibers are strong, but they are also extremely absorbent.  This makes liquid penetration and retention far more than what one is used to with other carpets. This high absorbency requires specialized polymer chemistry that is able to reduce that absorbency to near zero so that any spills can be blotted up quickly and efficiently."
