The Project Supported by Ural Federal University Moves to International Level

The startup's success is a remarkable example of young people being involved in innovative activities

EKATERINBURG, Russian Federation - March 20, 2019 - PRLog -- Last week, the Sverdlovsk Region Technopark launched a new production site for "BioMikroGeli" company, which founders – Andrey Elagin and Vadim Turygin – are USTU-UPI (now UrFU) graduates. The company produces reagents that can be used to eliminate emergency oil spills, clean water and solve other environmental problems. The second activity area of the company is the production of detergents: dishwashing gels and liquid detergents.

Head of Ural Federal University Innovative Infrastructure Nadezhda Terlyga points out that in many respects the success of this development's implementation was facilitated by the competence of the team behind it, which the students obtained during the Innovative Diving project (a system of involving Ural Federal University students in innovative activity), as well as the support by the innovative infrastructure.

'The team of young scientists from the Institute of Physics and Technology took part in the project Innovative diving, practicing the skills of commercialization of scientific and technological developments,' Nadezhda Terlyga says. 'Then the project team went through a full cycle of the services that the innovative infrastructure of UrFU provides to startups. The students had the opportunity to fully develop their idea, took several educational courses and enjoyed mentoring by the innovation infrastructure's partners. Thus, such a remarkable success of the company "BioMikroGeli" is a clear indication of the highest quality of our youth innovative business projects school. Students who dream to put their ideas into action and become a successful innovator should know that with the right approach, everything is possible.'

This year, BioMicroGeli signed a distribution contract for the supply of reagents for industrial water treatment with the national industrial chemistry distributor in Russia and the CIS countries – ZAO "Ruskhimset". Now "BioMikroGeli" is preparing to deliver its products to Malaysia for palm oil plants.

According to one of the company's founders, Andrey Elagin, the company currently has more than 80 patents in different countries – in the USA, Europe, China, and India.

'We are also being actively promoted in Estonia and England. Eventually, we managed to create a real international team. In addition, we became the residents of the Sverdlovsk Region High-Tech Technopark and Skolkovo,' Andrei Elagin says.

The history of the project "Innovative Diving" begins in 2010, when UrFU conducted the first off-site school of innovative projects. After the formation of the innovation infrastructure of the Ural Federal University, the school became an effective tool for integrating university students into innovation, finding ideas and working out projects at different stages. Over the years of development, the diving team has tested a huge number of educational technologies that solve various problems.

Now the "diving" shows consistent results: annually about 20 projects receive support from the university and begin a difficult path of the startup development. The participation in "Innovative diving" is completely free. UrFU students are excused from attending classes while taking the "Innovative diving" courses.
