Do you need non-DOT reasonable suspicion training for supervisors?

Mandatory Department of Transportation testing such as a post-accident drug test is only part of the picture when it comes to keeping the public safe. Non-DOT reasonable suspicion training for supervisors also plays an important role in safety, and Wisconsin Drug Testing Consortium (WDTC) offers a program to meet that need.

Managers who supervise drivers are required to attend training designed to help them understand if reasonable suspicion exists to require a driver to undergo testing. Participants in WDTC's program learn about the physical behavioral, speech and performance issues that may indicate probable alcohol or drug misuse. Drivers who appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol are subject to immediate testing.

WDTC's non-DOT reasonable suspicion training for supervisors meets the requirement for teaching those in supervisory positions what they must notice before requesting a driver or employee in a safety sensitive position undergo a drug and alcohol test. Owner-operators are not subject to this training, but they are required to register with a consortium for DOT drug and alcohol testing.

Here is what DOT and non-DOT reasonable suspicion training for supervisors entails

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), supervisors of at least one employee who is required to hold a commercial driver license (CDL) must complete DOT supervisor training. This training is not provided by the DOT.

The FMCSA website states that in order for supervisors to qualify as completing non-DOT reasonable suspicion training, they must:

• Take 60 minutes of training on the symptoms of alcohol abuse
• Another 60 minutes of training on the symptoms of controlled substances use (120 minutes total)

The purpose of the training is to teach supervisors to identify circumstances and indicators that may create reasonable suspicion that a driver is using or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, thereby supporting the referral of an employee for testing.
