FREMONT, Neb. - March 19, 2019 - PRLog -- Surrounded by the overflowing Platte and Elkhorn Rivers, Fremont, Nebraska has become an island that is unreachable and inescapable.

"We are in crisis," says internationally known and beloved children's author Julia Cook who calls Fremont her home. "We had record snowfalls this winter followed by huge amounts of rain. The snow melted quickly, and the rain melted the ice in nearby rivers causing ice jams to form. The water had no place to go so it just went everywhere!"

Cook reports that residents of Fremont and surrounding towns have bonded together and created walls of sandbags to attempt to manage the flow of water. Homes, crops, businesses and schools have been devastated.

"But we have not lost our will to help each other get through this," says Cook. "Many principals, teachers, and counselors from around the world have contacted me asking if there is anything they can do to help."

Please consider a Kids Helping Kids - Wear a Hat for Fremont Day! Students and schools that wish to participate pay $1 to wear their favorite hat to school. 100% of the money raised will be used to buy clothes, shoes and school supplies for kids in Fremont and the surrounding areas affected by the flooding. The school that raises the most money will receive an all-expense paid full-day author visit and parent night by Julia Cook.

"I want the best for children as they encounter life's hurdles," adds Cook whose books give kids the tools to become their own problem solvers. "The books I write are proven to keep kids on the right track while working through things they may not yet understand. Life is full of choices, and helping others is one of the easiest choices we can make."
