 Louisiana CLI & Limb Salvage Club Holds Inaugural Club DinnerMore than 125 healthcare providers hear from critical limb ischemia experts
LAFAYETTE, La. - March 15, 2019 - PRLog -- The Louisiana CLI & Limb Salvage Club held its inaugural Club Dinner on February 21, 2019, at the City Club at River Ranch. More than 125 attendees heard industry leaders provide an overview of critical limb ischemia (CLI), the deadliest form of peripheral artery disease (PAD). More than 20 million people in the U.S. have PAD, and more than 200,000 unnecessary amputations are performed annually.
Raising awareness about this deadly disease, which threatens both a patient's limbs and life, is the goal of the club's founder, David Allie, MD, Louisiana Cardiovascular & Limb Salvage Center. "These events are designed for the community," said Dr. Allie, who identified a need for local educational events focused on CLI and limb salvage. "The secret is to educate the healthcare community so that we can see patients in the early stages of the disease. Our community has a very high prevalence of diabetes and vascular disease. Louisiana also has one of the highest amputation rates in the U.S." Treating CLI requires a multidisciplinary approach, bringing vascular surgeons, cardiologists, podiatrists, family care providers, wound care specialists, nurses and allied health professionals together to focus on saving a patient's limbs, and life. Every club dinner will include speakers representing the podiatric and wound care fields, in addition to a vascular specialist that will speak to the importance of blood flow for CLI patients. Dr. Allie also pointed to changes in the healthcare arena, such as Medicare and new treatment options for CLI, as supporting the need for events such as these club dinners. "I'm discovering that there's a whole new generation of health care providers that need to be educated about CLI and limb salvage," said Dr. Allie. Poor long-term prognosis and high healthcare costs are associated with the disease. While the study reported that revascularization can save limbs and reduce mortality risks, a greater emphasis on disease awareness to better define and identify CLI is needed. Risk factors for CLI include, but are not limited, to smoking, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a family history of vascular disease. Warning signs of CLI include, but are not limited, to severe pain or numbness in the legs and feet while not moving; infections or ulcers that will not heal or heal very slowly; and absent or diminished pulses in the leg or feet.
