What Makes Water Taste Different
Water can taste different depending on where it's from. The source of the water has the biggest impact on the flavour of the water. For example, ground water is likely to taste more chalky due to the limestone found deep underground.

Tap water which has run through pipes on older buildings can taste like metal, but this is not the only cause of a metallic taste. Water which has a lower pH, or an excess trace of minerals are linked to metallic tasting water.
The culprits of this metallic taste are usually iron, manganese, zinc, and copper. These metals are stripped from municipal and residential pipes which are relatively old. Brass, copper and galvanized steel pipes have a lifespan of 80-100 years. Older pipes could be depositing lead into your water.
Low pH (potential Hydrogen) levels in water or 'Soft-water' can have a sour or acidic taste which can be identifies as metallic. The normal range should be 6.5 to 8.5.
Why Does my Water Taste Sweet?
A sweet taste is also indicative of a high concentration of natural occurring minerals or an imbalance of waters alkaline or pH levels.
Calcium is a commonly found mineral which can lead to a sweeter taste in your water. Other than calcium, your pipes could be the source of a sweeter taster in your water. This can usually be solved by letting your taps run for a little while, clearing out the pipes and reducing the sweetness.
Other sources of a sweet taste in your water could in fact be your olfactory system responding to a smell.
Why Does my Water Taste Like Salt?
A salty aftertaste is a result of chloride ions or sulphates present in water. This is usually caused by industrial waste, drainage from irrigation or ocean water entering reservoirs.
Sulphates in water can occur naturally from the breakdown of shale or sulphide ore, which can cause a strange taste as well as having a laxative effect.
