HAMPTON, VA, March 12, 2019 —The Soka Gakkai International (SGI-USA (https://www.sgi-usa.org/)) announces the opening of its newest center for Buddhist activities at 2078 Nickerson Blvd.in Hampton, VA. The inaugural open house will be held on Sunday, March 31, from 3:00-6:00 p.m. This center serves 1,200 members in southern Virginia, from Hampton Roads to Richmond.
SGI-USA is the most diverse Buddhist community in the United States, with more than 500 chapters and 100 centers throughout the country. SGI-USA is part of an international organization of more than 12 million people in 192 countries and territories.
SGI members practice Nichiren Buddhism (https://www.sgi-usa.org/basics-of-buddhism/), which teaches that each person has the courage, wisdom, and compassion to face and surmount any of life's challenges. It is based on core Buddhist principles such as nonviolence, respect for the dignity of human life and the interconnectedness of self and the environment. SGI supports human rights education, the movement to abolish nuclear weapons, and promotes sustainable development.
The open house will include showings of several brief videos, including a testimonial from world-renown actor and SGI member Orlando Bloom (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah1z9CMo01k). There will also be standing displays on SGI programs, such as Victory Over Violence (https://www.sgi.org/in-focus/2014/victory-over-violence-s...). VOV is a movement to help inspire young people throughout the world to identify and root out violence in their daily lives and in their communities and supports the United Nations Culture of Peace initiative.
