THORNHILL, Ontario - March 13, 2019 - PRLog -- Most parents spend a great deal of time thinking about their child and how they will make it in this world as they get older. If your child has been diagnosed with ASD or if they fall on the autism spectrum, then you are most likely even more concerned about the future. There are plenty of holistic and medical therapies available to help, but there are also plenty of things you can do daily to help improve things at home. I AM SMART S-COOL has put together a list of 7 great tips you can use as a parent of an autistic child.

Be Positive

Maintaining a positive demeanor and offering your child positive reinforcement is a valuable way to encourage good behavior. When your child does something correctly or behaves well, you should make sure to reward their behavior. Make sure that you inform them specifically about which actions or behaviors are responsible for their rewards. Also, encourage your child to be themselves and love them for their unique personality.

Keep a Schedule

Keeping a consistent schedule will help children on the spectrum to better manage their emotions and their time. Always give them guidance along with the appropriate interaction for each interaction so they can learn as much as possible from their therapy sessions. This will help your child to learn new behaviors and skills quicker. Encourage their teachers and therapist to maintain schedules and techniques so that you can maintain the same methods at home for better integration.

Play On Time

Make sure you add playtime with your child to their daily schedule. Try adding different activities that are meant only for fun as opposed to those geared to learning. This will give your child a chance to be free and open up to you emotionally.

Be Patient

When it comes to autistic children, it's important to be patient. Expect to cycle through a wide range of treatments, techniques, and approaches until you find a blend that works well for your individual child. Don't lose heart or give up if something that works for one parent doesn't work for you.

Get Involved

Make a point to include your child in your day to day routine. It's easier for parents of children with unpredictable behavior to shelter them at home, but by taking them with you on regular outings such as to the post office or grocery store, you will help them to learn to interact with the outside world.

Ask For Help

Don't be afraid to reach out to others if you need help. There are support groups, doctors, as well as your family and friends that are eager to lend you a helping hand. Not only can you get advice on similar challenges, but you can also make sure you are taking care of yourself by not overdoing it.

Consider Respite Care

Being a parent of an autistic child is a challenging yet rewarding job. If you have a child who has intense needs or is further along the spectrum, respite care is a great way to ensure they get the level of professional care they need without getting burned out yourself.
