AUA College of Medicine Alumnus Organizes Medical Camps in India to Provide Aid to Local Community

Dr. Swaiman Singh organizes local doctors to provide preventative screenings to Punjab Community

NEW YORK - March 11, 2019 - PRLog -- American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine, a medical school dedicated to providing education of the highest quality, granting opportunities to underrepresented minorities and fostering a diverse academic community, alumnus, Swaiman Singh M.D., to host medical camps in Punjab, India.

Upon graduating from AUA in 2015, Dr. Singh continued his studies by completing his Internal Medicine Residency at Drexel University College of Medicine in Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia. Currently, he is a Cardiology Fellow at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center/Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health in Newark, New Jersey. While Dr. Singh now lives in the U.S., he is committed to AUA's mission of supporting underserved communities by providing medical aid to his hometown of Pakhoke, in the state of Punjab, India.

"For the past nine years, I made a habit of assisting people in and around my village," said Dr. Singh. "Now that I am a physician, that responsibility has taken on a new meaning. I now teach and provide guidance on common disease prevention in the local area. Many people in my hometown don't have basic healthcare and education which motivated me to take action."

This month, Dr. Singh is organizing two first-ever medical camps in India. He is teaming up with nonprofit organizations, local doctors, pharmacists and dentists to diagnose patients, provide medication, and educate patients on proper prevention and care. He and his team of doctors, who specialize in sectors including cardiology, pediatrics, internal medicine, ophthalmology, orthopedics, and obstetrics, will be offering medical services to camp attendees. Services provided at the events include cancer screenings, blood tests, and medication information sessions. The camps will take place in Pakhoke on March 14, and Ludhiana on March 23. Dr. Singh and his team are preparing to service 5,000 to 10,000 residents.

"My plan is to start here and use this year as a blueprint for my visits every year from here on out," he said. "I hope to show my friends and colleagues in the U.S. and elsewhere what can be done through teamwork and a commitment to serving local communities. I know we can help a tremendous number of people in great need."

Dr. Singh's experience at AUA paved the way for his future and left a remarkable impression on his career path. He credits his commitment to giving back as a gift from AUA.

"Everything I'm doing now is a gift from AUA – the education I received, the classmates, now colleagues, who I can now reach out to," said Dr. Singh. "In Newark, I am able to serve a population in great need and I am hoping to do the same for people in India."
