SAN FRANCISCO - March 7, 2019 - PRLog -- Few things can raise such ambivalence in a film producer or a theater owner as "sold out" seating. On one hand, there's the obvious excitement of a full house but, on the flip side, it means you've likely had to turn away fans looking forward to enjoying a comfortable theater and a great film. San Francisco's historic Roxie Theater and the Producer of the award-winning Chesley Bonestell: A Brush with the Future recently faced just such a dilemma when Day Two of the film's premiere screening on February 23rd filled up so fast many patrons could only hope for a future "Brush with the Future." But now there's great news because the film - named "Best Documentary" on two coasts about "The Father of Space Art" - returns for an encore screening at the Roxie on March 17th at 1:30pm.

If you're new to the name Chesley Bonestell, you're not alone.  For decades, the breathtaking paintings of Mr. Bonestell (1888-1986) have taken viewers through and beyond our solar system. He is even credited as being a quiet force behind the creation of America's space program.  Born in San Francisco, Mr. Bonestell not only survived the 1906 earthquake and helped rebuild the city in its aftermath but also created illustrations of the Golden Gate Bridge that made sure it was built.

"Chesley Bonestell had an almost Zelig-like ability to be there when history was happening — and he made quite a bit of it himself." wrote film critic G. Allen Johnson of the San Francisco Chronicle in his February 15th review "Visionary 'space art' pioneer Chesley Bonestell celebrated in documentary (https://datebook.sfchronicle.com/movies-tv/visionary-spac...)."

Chesley Bonestell: A Brush with the Future is the first film ever made about this visionary painter. It features archival interviews with Bonestell, along with insightful commentary from Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey), Star Wars veterans Ben Burtt, Craig Barron and Richard Edlund, as well as numerous participants from the Bay Area.

"Bonestell is the subject of a terrific new documentary, 'Chesley Bonestell: A Brush with the Future'...a lovely tribute to a genuine visionary." wrote "Berkeleyside" film critic John Seal following the premiere.

Beyond the stars, Chesley Bonestell: A Brush with the Future also takes a more earthbound journey through his achievements in architecture, film and art. While living in San Francisco, he lent his talents to many landmark structures such as the Halladie Building, the Hobart Building and Filoli in Woodside. His architectural skills created movie magic when he moved to Hollywood, where his iconic matte paintings appeared in film classics like Citizen Kane, The Fountainhead, Destination Moon and The War of the Worlds. Bonestell joined forces with rocket scientist Willy Ley and illustrated The Conquest of Space (1949), a best-seller that motivated Americans to conquer "The Final Frontier."

"It's really great that movie audiences are beginning to celebrate the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the Apollo Lunar Landing." said Producer/Writer/Director Douglass M. Stewart, Jr. "This film includes Chesley Bonestell's role in it. It's the untold story of the man who helped us get to the Moon with a paintbrush."

Chesley Bonestell: A Brush with the Future will have its Roxie encore screening on March 17th at 1:30pm.  For theater location, ticket information and to view the film's trailer (http://www.chesleybonestell.com/trailer.html), please visit The Roxie Theater website (https://www.roxie.com/ai1ec_event/chesley-bonestell-a-brush-with-the-future/?instance_id=31563) or call (415) 863-1087.
