SHELTON, Conn. - March 7, 2019 - PRLog -- Computer hacking, identity theft and other types of data breaches have the potential of causing untold harm, up to and including loss of personal privacy, financial assets or even business annihilation.

Cyber criminals have targeted major businesses: Google, FaceBook, Target, Yahoo, eBay, Equifax. Marriott International, TJX Companies, Uber and the long list goes on. Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported a shocking revelation that hits home on a personal basis:

"Millions of smartphone users confess their most intimate secrets to apps, including when they want to work on their belly fat or the price of the house they checked out last weekend. Other apps know users' body weight, blood pressure, menstrual cycles or pregnancy status," the Wall Street Journal article stated. "Unbeknown to most people, in many cases that data is being shared with someone else: Facebook Inc."

Pamela Gupta of Easton, a global cybersecurity leader and founder of OutSecure Inc., will help individuals and business owners understand the growing cyber risks in their lives and how these risks are now straddling digital and physical worlds.

She will talk about solutions and approaches to navigate a proactive path to prevention and protection during two upcoming talks, which are free of charge and open to the public.

The two back-to-back talks will take place on Sunday, March 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Greenwich Library, 101 West Putnam Ave., Greenwich Conn.

Session 1, from 3 to 4 o'clock, will cover cybersecurity in daily life: What you don't know can hurt you and your loved ones.

"We all know about the threat cyberspace can pose on our financial data, but if you own any 'smart' devices — and the average person owns five — or live in a connected 'smart' house, you are exposing your physical safety as well your personal and confidential information," Gupta said. "Learn about cyber risks in your daily life and how to avoid or mitigate them."

Session 2: Cybersecurity for protecting your business survival and profitability is geared toward all business owners, small and large.

"Cybersecurity is a complex area and hard to do right, even for experienced professionals," Gupta said. "Come and learn how to avoid mistakes that can destroy your business or lead to severe impact on your bottom-line in light of cyber risks to information and emerging technology."

Richard J. Colangelo Jr, State's Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk, presented a workshop on cyber security with Gupta at the Easton Public Library. Colangelo also chairs Easton's Board of Police Commissioners.

"Pam is very knowledge on the subject and a great presenter," Colangelo said. "She focuses on answering people's question on the topic. Every case we deal with in court has a some type of cyber component to it. Understanding information about yourself and how to help yourself is important to know."

Women of Innovation

Gupta has been named a 2019 Connecticut Technology Council Women of Innovation finalist in the Small Business category. The awards recognize Connecticut's leading voices in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The Women of Innovation event seeks to create a growing network of women in the "trenches" of STEM," according to the website. "Finalists are the scientists, researchers, academics, manufacturers, student leaders, drafters, entrepreneurs, and technicians who create tomorrow's advancements through their tireless efforts today."

The awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, March 27, at 5 p.m. at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville. Keynote speaker is Annie Lamont, current first lady of Connecticut and co-founder and managing partner of a venture capital firm that invests in early and growth stage tech-enabled companies shaping the future of healthcare information and financial services.

OutSecure

Gupta founded OutSecure Inc. (https://www.outsecure.com/) 10 years ago, drawing upon her unique combination of more than 20 years of technical, process, policy, and business experience.

The company provides consulting to public and private sector clients in the areas of privacy, security, cyber crime, breach management, and cyber strategy.

They are also developing security technology to proactively defend against emerging technology such as AI, smart cities and infrastructure as well as solutions for intelligent video surveillance.

"OutSecure works to identify what makes a company attractive for a breach, what hackers can monetize and what effect a disruption causes for the bottom line," Gupta said. "Boards and management of more mature operations do get it that cybersecurity is a business issue, but they don't have a good enough understanding to create right security strategy or approach. We help with that."

OutSecure creates strategic cyber programs for Fortune 500 companies to address information protection risks unique to their environment. Services include assistance to boards and senior management, security risk assessments, global compliance reviews, security in design of applications and products and defining mature security programs and strategy.

"Cybersecurity is a complex area that spans infrastructure, lines of business, supply chain, etc., so even for companies with a robust security team, it's easy to miss the alignment with business to truly ensure critical assets of a company are protected," Gupta said. "We provide that holistic third-party threat and risk assessment, which can be vital for risk mitigation as well as reduce the cost for securing assets.

"Our security technology is a critical part of the risk mitigation and protection program for our clients."
