Patient Safety Summit in Jeddah to Discuss Patient Empowerment and Community Engagement

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Feb. 21, 2019 - PRLog -- In the presence of 50 health ministers and WHO Director-General, the 4th Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety, to be held in Jeddah early next month, will discuss multiple topics related to patient safety. These topics include patient empowerment, engagement of community as an essential tool in improving patient safety, promotion of added value healthcare principles as a tool to improve learning from the events and risks of the health service. Experts and specialists will make necessary analysis and recommend actions to promote health literacy among patients and the consequent empowerment of patients and community engagement in patient safety.

It is noteworthy that the recent global efforts to improve patient safety were culminated in launching a series of global ministerial summits on patient safety, which started in London, United Kingdom in 2016, then moved to Bonn, Germany in 2017, and the 3rd summit in Tokyo, Japan in 2018. These summit series have started as a joint initiative from the UK and Germany healthcare ministries with the endorsement of the WHO.

Over the past 3 years, there has been an increase in the participation from countries worldwide with attendance of ministers of health and senior delegates from healthcare systems, where international experts engaged with political decision makers, whose ultimate goal is to generate and promote a global movement for patient safety.

The summit will be under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, from March 2nd-3rd, 2019 in Jeddah. The summit is one of the most important patient safety initiatives at the international level and the-first-of-its-kind in the region.

The patient safety is considered as a top priority and a cornerstone for the healthcare services system. The SPSC is one of the initiatives of the health system to improve the healthcare and in implementation of one of the most important initiatives of the National Transformation Program (NTP) in the health sector. The center represents a national reference for all matters related to patient safety and to help preventing medical errors and works to develop the national strategy for patient safety and ensuring its harmony with the initiatives of the NTP in the health sector.
