Mexico Receives Top Spot In 3 Categories For Scuba Diving Magazine's 2019 Readers Choice Awards

Playa del Carmen, Mexico February 19, 2019 -- Ever since acclaimed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau declared Cozumel the most spectacular dive site in the world, divers from around the globe have traveled to and become fans of the clear waters and sea life surrounding the quaint Mexican Caribbean island.

In the 2019 edition of Diving Magazine's Readers Choice Awards, over 5000 contributors submitted their selections for best diving locations in a number of categories ranging from Wreck Dives and Shore Dives to Macro Life.

When the ballots were tallied, Mexico came out on top in three categories. In addition to ranking number one for Best Overall Dive Destinations Caribbean Atlantic, Mexico was the favored destination for Best Value Caribbean Atlantic, while the Riviera Maya was voted the superior destination for Cavern, Cave and Grotto Caribbean Atlantic.

The Southeastern coast of Mexico draws scuba divers of all levels seeking to experience the region's extraordinary underwater wilderness. Deep water or wreck dive excursions take place from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. In between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, is the MUSA Underwater Museum, which features over 500 submerged sculptures in three galleries.

Beneath the Caribbean Sea and stretching from the Yucatan Peninsula to Honduras, the 620-mile long Mesoamerican Reef System boasts a stunning array of marine life. The largest barrier reef system in the Western Hemisphere is home to colonies of richly hued coral, sharks, sea turtles, and manatees.

Famed for its cenotes, the Riviera Maya's centuries-old caverns provide an otherworldly encounter even for those with broad scuba experience. Also referred to as 'underwater cathedrals,' the remarkable limestone formations below the surface of these turquoise pools are a sight to see. Furthermore, from June to September, divers can observe mammoth whale sharks near Isla Mujeres or magnificent bull sharks near Playa del Carmen in late fall to March.
