Bernstein Law Firm Announces Attorney Jay D. Stein as Newest Member of Team

Stein's addition to the team will allow the firm to offer representation to individuals in all aspects of family law, including valuation and disposition of high-value business interests, maintenance, and child concerns, such as support, custody and visitation, parentage cases, premarital and post-marital agreements, and other aspects of family law.

Stein and Bernstein Law Firm Principal Louis D. Bernstein began their careers as equity partners at the Chicago law firm Gould & Ratner over 30 years ago and have collaborated with many clients crossing over in terms of litigation needs. One recent collaboration included a prominent local business owner who filed for divorce and in return, was sued for millions of dollars, wrongfully claiming he spread a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) to her. Working in tandem, Stein handled the dissolution of marriage case and Bernstein successfully obtained the dismissal of her Law Division case, as well as the appeals emanating from the dismissal order.

Stein began his career as a judicial law clerk to Justice Robert J. Downing of the Illinois Appellate Court in 1981,and from there was a litigation partner at Gould & Ratner. In his most recent position, he was a founding partner of Stein & Stein, Ltd., a high net worth boutique family law practice, where he practiced for 26 years. As a respected authority in the field of family law, Stein has been recognized as an Illinois "Leading Lawyer" and "Super Lawyer" and is a regular contributor to the Illinois Institute of Continue Legal Education's Family Law practice handbook. He is co-author of "Discovery" Illinois Family Law: Preliminary Considerations in Dissolution Actions. Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education (IICLE).

Stein has represented leading business executives, entrepreneurs, and their spouses, including members of many of the most well-known families in Chicago. Notably, he represented the wife of Bill Wrigley, Jr., the chewing gum magnate, in a lengthy and complicated case in the Circuit Court of Cook County.

Stein is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association.  He is an alumnus of Northwestern University and Loyola University of Chicago School of Law.
