-- Veterans Legal Services (VLS), the primary provider of free legal services to low-income military veterans in the Greater Boston area, is proud to announce
it has received a $20,000 grant from The Boston Foundation through the Foundation's Open Door Grants program.
"This grant will help us stay current on our day-to-day operating expenses, a continuing priority as VLS continues to respond to the ever-growing demand for services," said Allan Ryan, Chairman of the VLS Board of Directors. "We are grateful to The Boston Foundation, as every dollar helps us promote self-sufficiency, financial security, and stability for our veterans and reach those who would likely otherwise go without the help they need."
VLS services approximately 800 veterans' cases per year at the New England Center & Home for Veterans, the Chelsea Soldiers' Home, Massachusetts Stand Down for Veterans, the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, the Norfolk County Veterans Treatment Court, and other community events for veterans.
"Veterans Legal Services fulfills an invaluable role, ensuring that veterans in the Commonwealth have access to a full range of legal services they need and deserve," said Paul S. Grogan, President and CEO of The Boston Foundation. "With this grant, we are pleased to recognize the ongoing hard work of VLS in supporting our homeless and other disadvantaged military veterans in their times of need."
VLS has been growing in recent years, expanding from a two-person organization in 2010 to an eight-person organization today. VLS now serves an even greater number of veterans by using its panel of approximately 200 volunteer attorneys. Organizational growth has been made possible by grants such as the Open Door Grant from The Boston Foundation.
The Boston Foundation Open Door Grants are competitive, one-year grants designed for organizations whose proposal is focused on Greater Boston and whose values align with those of the Foundation. Grants are awarded quarterly and are selected by staff through an inclusive evaluation process. Funds for this grant come from The Boston Foundation's Permanent Fund for Boston, Greater Boston's only endowed fund focusing on the pressing needs of Greater Boston. The Permanent Fund has been made possible by more than a century of gifts from those who seek to support innovative solutions to the region's most pressing problems since 1915.About Veterans Legal Services:
