Follow on Google News | Patented Landscape Wall Provides Wildfire DefenseIn the WUI (wildland / urban interface), wildfire risk is increasing with climate change.
The product is a new, more affordable and adaptable wildfire barrier for buildings in high-risk fire zones. It was recently approved for a 115- mph wind-shear specification and is flexible in design and dimentions. In the aftermath of the devastating CA fire season the company, whose management team includes a Camp Fire survivor, has released a video of a 1-hour torch test demonstrating the fire resistance of its patented mineral-based landscape wall. The wall is composed of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) hardened with magnesium-oxide outer faces interlocked between embedded steel posts. Fire-resistant finishes such as stucco, brick or stone facing add additional barrier protection. Even with Its masonry-like performance, the wall installation is similar to fencing. According to the Washington Post, it is estimated that about a third of new US homes are now built in what is known as the "Wildland/Urban Interface" (WUI). Since the recent National Climate Assessment predicts a massive increase in the frequency and severity of wildfire, preventive measures can become life-or-death decisions. FEMA's Wildfire Zone Construction Guide (https://www.fema.gov/ But as recent historic fires in both northern and southern CA have shown, embers in high winds ignite fuel wherever they travel and can cause the rapid devastation of whole communities. The combined wind and fire barrier established by solid greenewall has a dual deterrent effect. UC Berkeley fire researchers point out that in chaparral or brush fires, even if the defensible zone is clean, brush or debris built up against a flammable fence can ignite a "horizontal fire ladder" leading flames laterally into contact with the main building. Use of a non-combustible barrier is recommended. Historically used as a sound and visual barrier, perimeter security or to create outdoor living space, Greenewall now becomes part of resiliant design, providing an added defensive bulwark around the building. The product was patented in 2010, costs considerably less than equivalent brick, steel or masonry, and boasts over 100 installations in the Northern CA region. Coincident with its move to Nevada the firm is seeking funding to enable scaling of distribution to all Western states.
