Rising incidence and prevalence of fungal diseases are the major factor boosting the global antifungal agents market. There are millions of several fungal species on Earth, however, only 300 are known to make people sick. The fungal diseases are usually caused by fungi that are found in the environment. Most of these species are not dangerous, however, some kinds of species are harmful to health. The most common types of fungal infections comprise aspergillosis, blastomycosis, candidiasis, candida auris, coccidiomycosis (valley fever) and cryptococcus neoformans. Moreover, cryptococcal meningitis is a critical infection of the brain and is caused by a fungus, cryptococcus neoformans. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 220,000 new incidences of cryptococcal meningitis occur annually across the globe. This results in 181,000 deaths and most deaths are reported in Sub-Saharan Africa. CDC provides assistance to the several countries who are working to prevent deaths occurred due to cryptococcal disease by improving access to antifungal treatment. This, in turn, is supporting the demand for antifungal agents, such as drugs, powders, creams and ointment.
Furthermore, innovations in antifungal agents have witnessed that leads to the rise in the safety and efficacy of antifungal drugs. For instance, in July 2018, Sato Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Eisai Co., Ltd. announced to launch oral antifungal agent NAILIN capsules 100mg in Japan. It consists of the active ingredient fosravuconazole L-lysine ethanolate, discovered by Eisai, Ltd. Additionally, it has improved bioavailability, as compared to ravuconazole (a triazole antifungal drug). This is designed for the treatment of onychomycosis (a fungal infection of the nail). The introduction of this drug in Japan will be useful for the treatment of Japanese people suffering from onychomycosis.
