"New Horizons" - Jewish Family Escapes Russian Revolution in Truth-Based Novel

NEW YORK - Jan. 14, 2019 - PRLog -- The major people and events in "New Horizons" are real. Some details in this historical novel are told as oral history by the people who lived them, the Spivaks, ancestors of author Alex Bloch's wife. Other details were passed down through generations of the Spivak family.

The book is based on the true story of a Jewish family escaping the pogroms in the Ukraine, the slaughter and hunger during the Russian Revolution of 1917, and the following civil war there that lasted through 1920. The family moved along with many other Russians to the small, peaceful Chinese fishing village of Harbin in Manchuria.

Harbin grew to 375,000 residents by 1930, with nearly 300,000 of them Chinese. The Jewish population peaked at 20,000 before Japan invaded Manchuria, capturing Harbin in 1932. Once again faced with hardships, the siblings of the Spivak family left because of financial and family problems for the U.S. The parents left Harbin in 1930 for Palestine for religious reasons, while the daughter returned from the U.S., divorced her unfaithful husband, remarried, and went to Palestine in 1934.

About the Author: This is Dr. Alex Bloch's eighth book. He was born in Germany and came to Palestine as a child. From there he went to the U.S., where he earned a BS from M.I.T. and an MS from Columbia University. He eventually moved to Israel and received his Ph.D. in history from Tel-Aviv University, where he also taught. The author has written mainly historical novels after retirement.
