By: Cyrus Batchan Business Consulting A statistic that should come as no surprise to anyone in the California restaurant industry, or to any California resident for that matter, is that restaurant and foodservice job is one of the largest segment of the California labor force. There was an estimated over 1.7 million restaurant and foodservice workers in California in 2018. That represents nearly 10% of the total California civilian labor force of over 19 million. Experts project that workforce in the California restaurant and foodservice industry will grow about 10% by 2028. California's restaurant industry also represents a large part of the national restaurant industry sale and workforce. There was an estimated nearly 15 million employees in the restaurant industry nationwide. With over 1.7 million employees, California represents over 10% of the nationwide restaurant workers. California also represents over 10% of nationwide restaurant revenues. Estimated sales for California restaurants in 2017 was $82.2 billion, where nationwide sales for 2017 was $799 billion. Still, notes Cyrus Batchan, there remain important challenges for the restaurant industry. Low unemployment rate and increasing number of people who earn a bachelor's degree present a continuing challenge for restaurant staffing. At the turn of the century, approximately 1.2 million people earned a bachelor's degree. In less than 20 years, that number has risen to over 1.9 million individuals and is projected to continue rising in the future. Indeed, 59% of restaurateurs cite staffing as the top concern and about 30% of restaurateurs have job openings that they find difficult to fill. Other top concerns are high operating food costs and attracting and retaining customers, notes Mr. Batchan. *** Cyrus Leon Batchan is a business consultant in Sherman Oaks, California, focusing on restaurant and bar businesses.
