FREDERICK, Md. - Jan. 4, 2019 - PRLog -- Knight Sky, LLC is pleased to announce, that on December 14, 2018 they successfully completed a critical milestone for the USAF Pilot Phase 2 Flexible Modem Interface (FMI) program by demonstrating an operational implementation. A live demonstration took place on December 14, 2018. Knight Sky hosted key members of the USAF at its headquarters in Frederick, Maryland for the implementation of a standards compliant VSAT Terminal Manager.

The Pilot 2 program seeks to mature a Flexible Modem Interface (FMI) concept through a standards definition development using an Open System Architecture (OSA) approach. Knight Sky demonstrated how an FMI complainant application installed on existing DoD VSAT terminals can enable enhanced capabilities such as resource management and mission resiliency.

The demonstration included four VSAT terminal types with a variety of satellite modems and antennas from iDirect, Newtec, AVL, AQYR, and Kymeta. Each terminal roamed between various service provider networks operated by Global Eagle Entertainment, ITC Global/Panasonic, Network Innovations, and Knight Sky.

"Transitioning satellite terminal from one network to another such as going from a MILSATCOM network to a commercial SATCOM Network typically takes hours if not day to coordinate and perform." said David Meadows, "Knight Sky demonstrated how it can be done in minutes with little to no operator intervention."

This new roaming capability provides the U.S. Military with the flexibility needed to overcome communications disruption caused by interference, cyber-attack, or network failures.  It also provides the ability to manage SATCOM resources across the DoD enterprise through bandwidth utilization monitoring, mission planning, and asset management.

"Our successful demonstration of the VSAT Terminal Manger proved that with minimal investment an Order of Magnitude, improvement can be achieved in the Department of Defense (DoD) SATCOM enterprise." said George Knizewski Knight Sky President and CEO
