JAIPUR, India - Dec. 24, 2018 - PRLog -- RICE is an acronym which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation and is recommended to reduce swelling, ease the pain, and speed up healing when a person has injured a muscle, tendon, or ligament. Doctors might recommend this in case of a sprain, strain, bruises, soft tissue injuries and minor injuries like an aching knee, ankle, or wrist that people might sustain after playing sports or falling and twisting or pulling a muscle. All these can be easily healed at home by using this four-step method called RICE, that is, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.
Step 1: Rest
It is advised to stop any physical activity if a person is hurt to keep the affected area stable. This is done so that there's no strain on the injured area for at least first two days as movement can make the injury worse and lead to bruising. Giving rest to the injured body part gives it some time to heal.
Step 2: Ice
Ice reduces pain and swelling by numbing the affected area and therefore doctors usually recommend to ice the injury for 10 to 15 minutes, four to eight times a day especially for the first 3 days, but you should keep in mind that the ice should hover above your skin and should not actually touch the skin directly.
Step 3: Compression
Wrapping the injured area with an elastic bandage is advised and recommended to provide support, reduce blood flow, and limit swelling, but one should ensure that it is not wrapped too tightly as it might put too much strain on the blood vessels which will interrupt the normal blood flow. This will make the skin feel cold, numb and tingly. Pressure keeps swelling under control and compression is effective for up to 1 week.
Step 4: Elevation
Keeping the area that has been injured raised above the level of the heart to help reduce swelling and the associated pain, throbbing, internal bleeding that might lead to bruises and discomfort.Elevation makes it more difficult for blood to reach the spot of injury which helps in reducing swelling and experts say it is best to keep the affected area elevated for 2–3 hours a day. One can do so by using a pillow or a table.

As non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) also help to relieve the pain and are usually recommended by the doctors or physicians to reduce persistent pain and swelling. These include ibuprofen and naproxen.

It is also advised to seek medical care if the injured person cannot put any weight on the area that was injured or the injured area is numb or disfigured or if the injury is recurring. Doctors usually recommend the patient to take utmost precautions while returning to normal everyday activities.

Thus, day to day sports injuries are something that you do not ever have to worry about as these can be treated even at home, but it is advised that you go and see a doctor or physician if such injuries occur because it can lead to serious repercussions. Players and athletes must not take such injuries lightly and must take them seriously as their whole careers depend on their physical health.

Thus, relying on this easy method of RICE, that stands for Rest, Ice, compression and Elevation is something that you can do as it is a tried and tested method and is used by doctors and physicians all over the world to treat soft tissue injuries, like sprain and strain, but the method is not usually recommended to treat broken bones or more serious injuries to the soft tissue as these may require medication, surgery, or extensive physical therapy.
