In-office or over the counter are the two types of teeth whitening commonly available. The main difference between the two products is the concentration of the bleaching serum or gel. Your dentist only has access to the highest concentrated stain-removing gels or serums. Over the counter, whitening products use a gel or serum with a low concentration. In-office treatments can be as simple as a one time visit and instruction, and then the patient can use at home.
The two active ingredients in whitening gels are Hydrogen Peroxide or Carbamide Peroxide. They contain a small percentage of Hydrogen Peroxide. Carbamide Peroxide usually has a lower concentration because the solution when used creates a pure Hydrogen Peroxide for bleaching. Hydrogen Peroxide solution can contain some water which is why it usually takes a higher strength to achieve the same results. Also, some gels or serums have added things like fluoride and desensitizers.
Furthermore, a popular technology used today is an activation light. An ultraviolet light or high-frequency light is used to accelerate the whitening process. However, there has been no evidence that these lights do a better job at whitening your teeth.
