By: Caribbean American Cultural Arts Foundation The donation will help survivors of Hurricane Irma and Maria who are currently undergoing kidney dialysis treatment at the Roy Lester Schneider Medical Center in Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands. This well needed holiday gift will help increase patient survival rates, improve quality of care and reduce costs to patients through the purchase of an EMR dialysis system (Electronic Medical Record solutions). The system will allow the dialysis unit at the Roy Lester Schneider Medical Center to provide the same level of care as Americans receiving treatment in the mainland. The system is a wish come true for hospital staff and it will make treatment more efficient for patients. "This is what CACAF is about ongoing support of hurricane survivors. We want to offer practical help that will meet the needs of Caribbean-Americans who are receiving care this holiday season," says Thomas, "We wanted to do something life affirming to support the great work at Schneider and help ensure that patients live long and healthy lives." Through the work of CACAF, Thomas and his team have established several initiatives to meet the needs of hurricane survivors. In 2017, they hosted a luncheon and dinner for medical evacuees from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands who were receiving treatment in metro-Atlanta. In the same year, they hosted a winter coat drive for those evacuees. In June, CACAF hosted its inaugural fundraising gala at the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta with the support of General Manager, Yvette Thomas-Henry. The event raised more than $25,000 to help storm victims. Thomas and his team at CACAF have also received aide from Toys for Tots, Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery, The Caribbean American Association, Community Action Now and The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism. CACAF was founded in 2016 by Michael Thomas. Since then, the foundation has established programs that have fed hurricane evacuees, offered resources toward recovery and gathered strategic support before disaster strikes. The fund has supported educational mentorship programs for young people seeking higher education and projects that have promoted workforce and skills development. In addition, the foundation has been committed to the study, advancement and presentation of Caribbean arts, culture and humanities.
