He grew up in Mississippi, attended Marion Military Institute, the U. S. Naval Academy, the University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of Alabama. He has been an entrepreneur in the hospitality industry and a sales engineer with an international heavy industry as a port consultant. A pilot since the age of sixteen, he also served as commercial captain of a seventy-foot sailing vessel. He has flown professionally and participated in air shows flying aerobatics in open-cockpit bi-planes. He was honored with the prestigious FAA Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. In 1959, he served as an artillery officer in Korea. He was honored for his literary works by a concurrent resolution of the Mississippi House and Senate.
