Australia immigration experts look to Canada for inspiration

The need for immigration reform becomes more imminent as more than 20 percent of the current Australian population is comprised of immigrants. This is creating a crisis for Australian cities as more than 80 percent of the immigrants are currently opting to live in the cities. In the current Australia immigration system, the states a have a limited role to play in nominating skilled visa applicants. Prime Minister Morrison is asking for a bigger role to be played by the territories. Citing the example of the Canadian government which gives its provinces a greater autonomy for setting immigration targets as well as deciding on eligibility criteria for nomination. This step has helped to reduce the stress of immigration on cities by shifting the bulk of immigrants towards the rural areas.
