A new way for business women to lead and shatter the glass ceiling
ATHENA Valley of the Sun,' the East Valley Affiliate of ATHENA International announces women's leadership program "Champions of Change".
The research, conducted in the late 1990s, surveyed over 400 ATHENA Leadership Award recipients across the United States. The ATHENA Leadership Award honors women or men who attain professional excellence and community service and who are actively assisting women in their achievement of professional excellence and leadership skills. The study looked at various aspects of how the participants achieved their success, including what made them effective in challenging circumstances, how they built their teams and how they uncovered their core values. According to Martha Mertz, founder of ATHENA International, "the participants didn't see themselves as leaders. They were not drawing on knowledge from leadership courses or training. The study was designed to uncover the intuitive way women accomplish great things".
Eight attributes derived from the research are: live authentically, learn constantly, advocate fiercely, act courageously, foster collaboration, build relationships, give back and celebrate.
According to Mertz "traditionally, leadership is hierarchical, like a ladder". "Everyone is ranked according to title and position, the people at the top having the most authority and power".
Mertz added, "In contrast, the ATHENA Leadership Model is like a circle, people working side by side with a focus on the project rather than the importance of any individual. This is how women naturally thrive".
This program, called Champions of Change, offers women the opportunity to develop their unique leadership style within the context of the ATHENA Leadership model.
Valley of the Sun Founder, Dr. Kristine Quade is committed to the program and expects it to improve the lives of Valley women. "It provides the opportunity to customize it to the needs and experiences of the participants,"
