By: sunshine meadows equestrian village The Hambletonian, a much-anticipated and prestigious horse race for 3-year-old trotters (akin to the Kentucky Derby); was not a letdown on this past 93rd race. The New Jersey horse race is well-respected in the equine industry and trainers prepare their horses all year long to have an opportunity to compete. This year, amidst a field of 9 colts stood one filly, Atlanta. Could that girl beat the boys? Atlanta (2-1), Team Zeron's filly, won the $1 million Hambletonian becoming the 14th filly to capture the famed trotting race. "She's the best horse I've ever drove," Scott Zeron said. It was an emotional victory for the father-son team from Oakville, Ontario. Rick Zeron and his son Scott Zeron, of Zeron Racing, won the trotting classic in their first try. Atlanta trotted strongly to the wire, winning by 1 length over 29-1 shot Met's Hall. The time was 1:50 4/5 for the mile. Also stabled at Sunshine Meadows are many riding horse trainers for English, Western and Dressage, who have shown successfully world-wide. The Sunshine Meadows Equestrian Village features an all new one-mile racetrack, a five-eighths mile training track and a half mile Euro strip. Tucked away, this hidden gem with nearly 200 acres, 18 barns that can house more than 680 horses, numerous show and jump rings and turnout paddocks.
