By: Versiti Reich, the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, is perhaps best known for the comeback he led against the Miami Hurricanes in 1984. In a back-up role, he took the field and led the Terrapins on to overcome a 31-point halftime lead and win the game 42-40, then the biggest comeback in college football history. Drafted in the third round of the 1985 NFL Draft by Buffalo, he played for the Bills, Carolina Panthers, New York Jets and Detroit Lions during a career that spanned 13 years. In his first season as head coach of the Colts, Reich began his coaching career as an intern with the Colts in 2006. He returned to the team as quarterbacks, offensive assistant and receivers coach from 2008-2011. After, he spent time in the coaching ranks with Arizona, San Diego and Philadelphia before taking the Colts job. Each year, the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Blood Center, part of Versiti, host Indiana's largest single-day blood drive of the year. Bleed Blue ensures that hospitals can meet Hoosier patient needs over the holidays and into 2019. Last year, more than 1,600 footballs featuring Colts running back Frank Gore were given to Hoosiers who gave life-saving blood at the drive. This year's drive, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Dec. 15 at Lucas Oil Stadium, located at 500 S. Capitol Ave., will again include free, fun and family-friendly activities, tours of the Colts field and locker room, chances to win prizes and appearances by Colts cheerleaders and Blue, the Colts mascot. Anyone 16 or older in good health who meets eligibility requirements is encouraged to donate blood. Parental consent is required for donors age 16 to give. The donation process takes about an hour. Donors should bring a photo ID that includes their birth date. Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome. Part of Versiti, Indiana Blood Center typically collects more than 130,000 units of blood annually and supplies blood to more than 60 Indiana hospitals and beyond. For more, visit Versiti.org/ End
