Nobel-nominated author Ethan Gutmann exposes China's killing of prisoners of conscience for organs

TAIPEI, Taiwan & ARLINGTON, Va. - Nov. 5, 2018 - PRLog -- Taiwan-based Phalaenopsis Solutions and US-based GamePlan Press, Inc. have partnered to bring the Chinese edition of Ethan Gutmann's The Slaughter to market on November 12. Gutmann is an investigative journalist who was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 2017 for his exposure of the people, places, and technologies associated with China's illegal organ harvesting.

First published in English by Prometheus Books, The Slaughter has since been translated into multiple languages and helped spark the rise of global efforts to curtail China's persecution of Uyghurs, Falun Gong, Eastern Light Christians, and Tibetans.

"Publishing The Slaughter in Mandarin makes it possible to inform the people of Taiwan of the deep history of harvesting organs of political and religious prisoners and how that heinous act affects their lives," said Gutmann. "It is a step forward in alerting everyone in Taiwan that some of their countrymen in the medical community are complicit in promoting this atrocity."

Gutmann continued, "Global attention to the issue of illegal organ harvesting is escalating, just as organ tourism to China is escalating. Taiwan is now in a position to take the lead among democracies in reducing it."

For his book, Gutmann interviewed hundreds of witnesses in China, South East Asia, the United States, Europe, and Australia. Among the contributors to his body of evidence are Falun Gong who escaped and a physician from China who confessed to harvesting organs from a man who was presented to him wounded, but still alive.

The most high-profile contributor, however, is the current Mayor of Taipei, Ko Wen-je, a physician whom Gutmann has linked directly to organ harvesting procedures. Ko, who is running for re-election this month, has expertise in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) technology manufactured by the American company, Medtronic, with whom he was affiliated. Use of ECMO supports the efficient harvesting of organs from living donors and has dramatically increased the monetary value of every donor, consenting or unconsenting. Use of ECMO, which Ko taught to Chinese doctors in seminars in the mainland, has greatly heightened the incentive to harvest organs from prisoners of conscience and can be seen as a significant factor in the explosive growth of transplant activity throughout China over the last decade.

Brian Wu, founder of Phalaenopsis Solutions, stated that "The release of Chinese edition of The Slaughter will make Taiwanese people see the core value differences between Taiwan and China. Today in the 21st century, there are still 100 to 200 years of civilization gap between these two countries." Taiwan is the last surviving democracy among Chinese-speaking countries.

Maryann Karinch, founder of GamePlan Press, noted why her company sought the partnership with Phalaenopsis: "Information is our weapon of choice in fighting China's human rights violations. Organ harvesting without respect for the rights of innocent, unwilling donors is an evil act. It is a crime against nature and civilization—and it is a problem that is not going away anytime soon. It is too profitable for those who engage in it."
