The End of the Idea of War in the Monastery of Batalha
It will be held in November 17, 2018, by 7pm (19:00).
METANOIA is a kind of electronic opera with text by the legendary Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, as celebration of the hundred years of the end of World War I 1918-2018.
With about fifty compact discs and hundreds of concerts performed in the most important theaters of the world, Emanuel Pimenta started his career as a composer in the late 1970s. Among other teachers, he was one of the main students of the legendary German composer Hans Joachim Koellreutter, former disciple of Paul Hindemith and master of Luigi Nono and Karlheinz Stockhausen. His first opera, with libretto by Décio Pignatari was Frankenstern, who had its world première in 1984 at the large auditorium of the Modern Art Museum of São Paulo. Pimenta is also composer of more than a hundred works, among which of the first opera on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, presented in Rome, Italy, in 2008. As composer, Emanuel Pimenta worked as a partner of John Cage over his last seven years of life. He continued his path as a composer in several countries and also with choreographer Merce Cunningham, with pianists David Tudor and Christian Wolff, and with violinist Takehisa Kosugi, one of the founders of the Fluxus movement in the 1960s, for more than thirty years.
Audrey Riley is a brilliant, internationally acclaimed cellist who frequently collaborates with composer Gavin Bryars, among others. Since 2013, when she first performed at the Carnegie Hall in New York City, Laetitia Grimaldi has received several international awards and has been considered a revelation in lyric singing.
According to the composer, METANOIA is a work for the end of the idea of war. At the conclusion of the presentation, cheeses, breads, olive oil and wine will be offered in a celebration of peace.
The electronic opera METANOIA is also part of The New Art Fest (Web Summit); and will happen simultaneously in several countries through the Streaming Museum of New York.
According to Joaquim Pereira Ruivo, director of the Monastery of Batalha, this will be an important moment: "We have a world première of an internationally recognized composer, and the participation of two great names of contemporary classical music".
The electronic opera will still be characterized by several films directed by Pimenta, which in his words are "a kind of virtual scenario". The films deal with art world in the last five hundred years, with world personalities and with images of the beginning of cinema. The music is entirely elaborated inside Virtual Reality, as it has happened to good part of his compositions during the last forty years. Visit http://www.emanuelpimenta.net/
