St. Joseph Hospital's Annual Fundraising Gala Raises Over $574,999
Proceeds will benefit the cancer navigator program, cancer research program and new linear accelerator at the hospital's Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment

This event marks the first time that the gala's proceeds exclusively benefitted The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment at St. Joseph Hospital, which is the first center of its kind in Orange County to offer diagnostic screening, preventive services, clinical research and cancer treatment in one location.
"Since its opening ten years ago, The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment has successfully treated thousands of cancer patients through our innovative programs, leading-edge technology and compassionate care," said Jeremy S. Zoch, PhD, MHA, FACHE, chief executive of St. Joseph Hospital. "Thanks to our community's generosity and philanthropic support, we will continue our focused efforts on providing the highest quality care and best outcomes for the cancer patients we serve."
Celebration 2018 Co-Chair and long-time hospital supporter Marsha Moeller shared why she continues to raise awareness about cancer and the importance of philanthropy after losing her husband Ron Moeller to lung cancer in 2016. "After his diagnosis in 2010, Ron made it his mission to help fund critical services for The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment at St. Joseph Hospital. Not only did the hospital help Ron and our family battle cancer for more than six years, but they offered the best care and treatment in our community. Cancer touches so many lives and that's why we want to do what we can to help St. Joseph Hospital continue to offer the latest and greatest in medicine and technology,"
Along with cancer research, which includes clinical trials aimed to improve care for present and future cancer patients, proceeds will also fund the cancer center's navigator program. This program pairs newly diagnosed patients with a nurse specialized in their site-specific disease to help them "navigate" through information, appointments, treatment, cancer surveillance and into survivorship. In addition, the event also raised funds for a new Varian TrueBeam® linear accelerator, a revolutionary machine for radiation treatment which gives clinicians the ability to treat complex cases with increased precision, safety and effectiveness for both adults and children.
"The new linear accelerator that will be installed by the end of the year will allow us to pinpoint the smallest tumors and deliver radiation with even more precise accuracy," said Robert Ash, MD, medical director of the radiation oncology program at The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment and event Co-Chair. "One of the advantages of this new equipment is that it will significantly reduce the time it takes to administer radiation treatment. This is a great benefit for our pediatric patients because shorter treatment times may eliminate the need for anesthesia."
Along with Co-Chairs Marsha Moeller and Robert Ash, MD, the event was led by Honorary Co-Chairs Michele Carpenter, MD, Robert Del Junco, MD, Sam Huang, MD, Tariq Mahmood, MD, and Honorary Emeritus Chairs David Margileth, MD and James Padova, MD.
St. Joseph Hospital's Celebration 2018 also marks the annual presentation of the Spirit of St. Joseph Award, which honors donors who embody the spirit of St. Joseph in their generous work and have demonstrated a long term commitment to the hospital and its values. This year's awards went to Kathy and Jim Gough, and Diana and David Marglieth, MD.
The cancer research, navigator program and the linear accelerator are initiatives of the hospital's five-year Innovating for a Healthier Community comprehensive campaign that launched in 2015. This $50-million philanthropic goal will support the growth of key programs and provide funds for advanced technology within the hospital.
