CLEARWATER, Fla. - Oct. 30, 2018 - PRLog -- A Tampa Bay area rock legend is coming home, and he's coming home to stay. Stephen Christian is the lead singer of Anberlin, one of Florida's most respected alternative rock bands. Now he plans to be the permanent worship leader at one of Florida's most historic churches.
Calvary Church, which has locations in Clearwater, East Lake and Seminole, has been a stalwart in the region for more than 150 years. The church has never had a worship leader quite like Stephen Christian.
Anberlin toured the globe for a dozen years, made seven studio albums, and sold a million records. Now their lead singer is poised to become a local fixture, but in an entirely different kind of venue. Christian has always been identified with his strong, personal faith and has been leading worship at Calvary Chapel in Albuquerque, N.M., since coming off the road three years ago. He's found a new musical home in Christian music. His first solo LP, Wildfires, has been a critical and commercial success, and a second project is rumored to be in the works.
In addition to finding success in his new role since Anberlin, Christian has been focused on caring for his three young children with his wife, Julia, a Pinellas County native and graduate of Seminole High School. When Calvary Church came calling, it was time to come home.
Calvary's Pastor, Dr. Willy Rice, expressed Calvary's excitement at welcoming Christian into the fold.
"What impressed me the most was his sincere love for Christ and his genuine sense of call to leading God's people in worship," Rice said. "He has excelled as an entertainer and a performer, but he knows worship isn't first about entertainment or performance. It's about the heart. It's about encountering God."
For his part, Stephen Christian seems just as enthusiastic.
"I could not be more excited to move home and invest in the community as the worship pastor at Calvary Church," he said. "My wife, Julia, our three young children, and I long to plant deep roots and give back to an area that has given so much to us over the years. From Anberlin to my own worship projects, music has always been an intricate part of my life and to be able to utilize my passions for Jesus Christ at a church as incredible as Calvary is an unbelievable opportunity."
Christian begins his tenure at Calvary on Jan. 6, 2019. He'll be live at the church's Clearwater campus, which is at 110 N. McMullen Booth Road, at 9:15 and 11:00 a.m. Sundays. Visit www.calvary.us for details.
