Prevention Efforts Compliment Substance Abuse Treatment

EL PASO, Texas - Oct. 19, 2018 - PRLog -- The police department is partnering with Aliviane, a substance abuse treatment provider, to promote safe prescription drug disposal to members of the local community.

They are distributing drug deactivation and disposal bags. When warm water is added to the bag, a water-soluble substance releases carbon to neutralize all drug ingredients contained inside.

The El Paso Police Department are offering the bags for free at region command center locations.

Other common prescription drug disposal recommendations include the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back events.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website also contains safe medication disposal tips, including hazard warnings for flushing medication that can be harmful to the environment.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 2,800 drug overdose deaths occurred in the state during 2016.

Aliviane and police department officials expressed that they hope the partnership can save lives.
