PEI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to helping deaf and hard-of-hearing adults and children develop and strengthen auditory and oral communication skills through the advanced technology of cochlear implants and/or hearing aids. Their mission is to help deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals realize their unlimited potential and allow them to actively participate in the hearing and speaking world.
Originally founded as a research and pediatric cochlear implant provider, PEI and its programs evolved as community needs grew. PEI founded the School for Oral and Deaf Education—New Mexico's only completely deaf education program serving children 18 months through 8 years.
Each year, PEI hosts Sounds of the Seasons— A fundraising gala in support of PEI's innovative programs that address the full spectrum of client needs including diagnosis, education, research, public awareness, and implant surgery.
The gala also seeks to generate awareness, amongst the community at-large, of what it means to be deaf or hard of hearing during a time of year characterized by holiday music and caroling.
"When we started PEI in January 2014, [our son] had no natural language, but within the last three years we've seen gestures become words and turn into sentences, frustrated tantrums turned into voiced concerns, audible desires exclaimed, and the ability to laugh at what is heard. It is possible for deaf children to acquire language orally with the right care, experience, devotion, and work found at PEI. Moreover, he now has friends with whom he can relate shared hopes, struggles, and success." —Client Testimonial
PEI is asking for New Mexico's support through gala ticket sales, sponsorship packages, and auction donations. Proceeds support PEI's programs and their clients so profoundly affected by hearing loss.
"PEI... never let us give up hope that [our son] would be able to live a full life that included listening and speaking. Through our experience we have never felt alone or unsupported, we have been given plenty of resources, education, guidance and peers. We are beyond grateful for PEI." —Client Testimonial
