A person who owns securities valued at $1 million dollars, can borrow up to $800,000 against such a security from specialty lenders or from their broker dealer. The process allows an individual not to have to sell the security but to pledge it to a lender and in return obtain a low interest loan as low as 3% annually.

REPO loans are very popular in Asia and entail an owner of securities selling his securities temporarily under a REPO Agreement, whereby at the end of a loan term, the borrower will repurchase the securities back.
