Japonesque sterling silver water pitcher. Made by Whiting in New York, ca 1885. Four curved sides, short round neck, wavy asymmetrical mouth, and scrolled handle. Applied bold spillover ornament. On one side is a dragonfly with wings and tail wrapping around corners. On other side is an iris flower on acid-etched foliate ground heightened with engraving: fluid tendrils entwine, climb, and sway. Neck and foot have stylized ornamental borders. Handle has same as well as semi-abstract fluid knotwork mounts. Neck and mouth have tooled waving. Neck has vertical slashing.

A stunner with dramatic period motifs. Hallmark includes no. 1008B and Boston retailer's stamp Bigelow, Kennard. Very good condition with deep patina.

Dimensions: H 9 5/8 x W 7 7/8 x D 5 1/4 in. Heavy weight: 42.6 troy ounces.
