Environmentally-Focused Nonprofit to Host Watershed Cleanup Event in Lawrenceville, Ga. October 20
By: Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful
"The mission of the Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services is to facilitate collaboration that improves the well-being of the community," said Schelly Marlatt, Executive Director for Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful. "Our organization shares in that mission. Between the Yellow River, Chattahoochee River, Apalachee River, Alcovy River, Lake Lanier and a sprawling network of creeks and streams, water is very central to the Gwinnett County community. Our watersheds feed these water sources, so it's vital that we all band together to protect our watersheds and keep them clean – for the well-being of our citizens, wildlife and the local environment. Cleanup events like the one we have planned for Great Days of Service 2018 serve as an awesome way to introduce teenagers to the concept of volunteerism, a unique form of team building for local companies, a great community service project for local churches and organizations, and just a fun way to have a lasting impact on your environment while meeting your neighbors from all over Gwinnett. We hope to have a great big crowd at this year's event."
Everything that happens on or around a watershed can have an impact on it and the water sources it feeds. A watershed comprises the area of land surrounding a lake, stream or pond. Water from rain and runoff flows downhill from the watershed into the waterway, often carrying with it any litter, pet waste, chemical pollution and the like. Each year, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful selects a different watershed at which to host its Great Days of Service cleanup event in order to focus on different areas of the county. GCB's Great Days of Service Project 2018 will focus on the Upper Yellow Watershed in Lawrenceville on Saturday, October 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will meet at Moore Middle School at 1221 Lawrenceville Highway in Lawrenceville and must be 14 years of age or older to participate. Preregistration is required and can be completed online at http://www.gwinnettcb.org/
