Follow on Google News | Local charity's Quarter Auction to benefit children with special needsFriends of Nathan Foundation plans Nov. 4 event in Schaumburg featuring dozens of prizes
To support the Friends of Nathan's mission to assist children in need, log on to EventBrite.com and search "Friends of Nathan Foundation." "This is a fun way for people to win great prizes before the holidays," FONF board member Janet Smith said. "The money raised will help us offer life-changing therapies for children in need, just like Nathan." Who is Nathan? A local boy named Nathan was the inspiration behind the foundation. Born prematurely and weighing slightly more than 4 pounds, he was diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy at 15 months old. His family was told he would never walk. At age 6, he took 50 independent steps. He had surgery in 2012 that included lengthening multiple muscles and bone derotation of the tibia/fibula. After four weeks of post-surgery physical therapy, Nathan's walking ability improved, and he is more functional and independent than ever. Today, he takes the bus to and from school and is performing all activities in his classroom. He plays soccer in a program for children with special needs and likes to draw and play basketball. Win prizes for a worthy cause The event will feature prizes from dozens of different vendors, including LuLaRoe, Scentsy, Grandpa's Fudge, Usborne Books, Gold Canyon Candles, Tupperware and Jamberry. Vendors also will have items for sale. The auction will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 at Friendship Village, which is located at 350 W. Schaumburg Road. How does a Quarter Auction work? Attendees purchase a $10 numbered paddle to participate in the auction. Additional paddles are available for purchase. Auction items will be put up for bid at prices ranging from three to eight quarters. As items are presented, attendees can place the designated amount of quarters in the bowl provided and hold up their paddles. The auctioneer will pick the winning paddle number. Sponsorship opportunities Local businesses and residents can support the event by choosing one of four sponsorship levels — Platinum ($5,000), Gold ($2,500), Silver ($1,000) or Bronze ($500). Sponsors will be recognized on the Friends of Nathan Foundation website and at the event. To sponsor the event, visit the foundation's website (http://www.thefonf.org/ End
