Concerns Over Drugs Use at Music Festivals Prompted by Recent Deaths

Given the number of recent deaths at music festivals worldwide, officials are considering additional prevention and safety measures.

INDIO, Calif. - Sept. 24, 2018 - PRLog -- Due to recent suspected drug overdoses at multiple music festivals this month, government and healthcare officials around the world are discussing ways to approach the problem.

A recent TickPick survey, which analyzed responses of more than 1,000 U.S. festival guests, found that in addition to high marijuana and alcohol use rates, 13 percent of people had tried MDMA. Ultra, Bonnaroo and Electric Daisy Carnival experienced the highest U.S. festival drug use rates last year.

While various officials are considering banning festivals, others are promoting harm-reduction approaches to decrease substance abuse.

In the U.K. many festivals utilize drug testing kits, which are coupled with required information sessions on the dangers of drug use.

The popular Coachella music festival in California increased drug policing policies and security carried emergency medical kits at the event this April.

Australian government officials are also considering pill testing, in addition to expanding addiction treatment resources and other measures.
