Behind The Beat: The Stars Behind Electric Zoos Ten Year Anniversary
Mix 247 EDM Video Interviews with Kaskade, Cash Cash and Alan Walker
By: Mix 247 EDM
Electric Zoo is always extremely welcoming and inviting with the way its decorated with various art installations really playing into the "zoo" theme. I was surprised, however, this year there wasn't really a themed piece on the main stage like they've had in previous years.
Friday sets I saw in part were Herobust, Slander, Jauz, Virtual Self and Marshmello. I've previously seen each of these artists at other festivals or at their own headlining shows, but who really stood out the most to me was Virtual Self. I only saw him one other time previously, at his first show ever under that alias, at his practically kept secret show in Brooklyn, New York. This was my first time seeing him in a festival setting and it was beautiful to watch how many people he and his music reach.
The true highlight of the night, however, went beyond the music. I had the chance to meet and talk with Herobust! I first discovered Herobust at EDC NY (RIP to the NY location) in 2016. It was my first festival, and I was still finding my sound. It started raining, and my friends and I went under the tent to avoid the rain a bit only to walk right into Herobust mid set. I was immediately hooked and have been hooked ever since. What a cool, easy going and down to earth kind of guy. Watch below to hear about how Herobust created his latest single WTF, what festivals create a true community and family vibe, how his parents reacted to his decision to make music, and more!
Saturday, I did the rest of my interviews, so I didn't get to catch that many sets! I did get to see Cash Cash, some of Kaskade, and Martin Garrix. That was my first time seeing Cash Cash and I absolutely loved the high energy and fun vibes they brought. It was a much needed happy full on dance party! Following their set, I talked to the trio about their surprise guest performance by Abir, working with Bebe Rexha, their processes for gaining inspiration, and more.
Cash Cash put on an amazing set, and brought out Abir, who sings on their track Finest Hour, as a special guest. She absolutely crushed it! She sings and performs with such confidence it's impossible not to pay attention! I spoke with her about her performing with Cash Cash, her upcoming debut single, and her fall tour with Kiiara.
Even at such a young age, Alan Walker has a tremendous amount of success which happened pretty early in his career. We talked about how he manages to have fun and act his age, what made him get rid of his stage name DJ Walkzz, the best advice he's ever received, his latest single Darkside and more.
And for the highlight of my Ezoo Festival experience, meeting and interviewing Grammy-nominated, legendary and unbelievably talented Kaskade took the cake. He was incredibly kind and passionate, wonderfully humorous, and so humble. He radiated such a comfortable and positive energy, he made me feel right at home. He pleasantly discussed being back to Electric Zoo's 10 year anniversary after being a part of the first year, how the EDM community has transformed over the years, how some of his favorite songs came about, and much more! To get to know Kaskade a little better, watch below!
Sunday, I got to see full sets from 3LAU, Illenium, Gryffin and Tiesto and they were all beyond words incredible. Naturally, Illenium was my favorite set of not only the day, but of the weekend overall. I only cried three times!!! Seeing Tiesto was super amazing, though because it's been the longest since I've seen him last. It was such a memorable way to close out an unforgettable weekend. Ezoo really came through with a fire line up to celebrate their 10 year anniversary, and every DJ really put on their best sets to fully emerge in the celebration!
