RESTON, Va. - Sept. 16, 2018 - PRLog -- Jenkins is a wonderful and innovative open-source tool that helps companies automate their software development process with continuous integration and continuous delivery CI/CD. But out of the box, Jenkins has some limitations including required plug-ins, access control administration, ease of configuration, and scaling.

The Client: An amazingly sharp company with slick software (suffering pipeline dilemmas)

The Job: This project completely changes the framework of the client's system to support multiple processes and workflows to ensure collaboration, visibility, governance, and compliance.

At its core, this RestonLogic build transforms the client's Jenkins-based CI/CD platform to Concourse CI, a distributed system that will automate test-driven development, maintain compatibility between multiple build versions, target multiple platforms and configurations such as different clouds.

Perhaps most importantly, it will allow the team to deliver frequently — weekly, daily, or even multiple times a day.

The project leverages AWS Elastic Container Service (ECS) Fargate which allows the client to run containers without having to provision, configure, and scale clusters of virtual machines. In fact, Fargate removes the need to interact with or even think about servers or clusters.

The new architecture is built on Terraform, an infrastructure as code software by HashiCorp which allows users to define a datacenter infrastructure in a high-level configuration language, from which it can create an execution plan to build the infrastructure.

Other Architecture Components:
SonarQube — Open-source platform that allows continuous inspection of code quality to perform automatic reviews with static analysis of code to detect bugs, code smells, and security vulnerabilities on 20+ programming languages

Artifactory — An Enterprise Universal Repository Manager, an extension to the source code repository (stores the outcome of the build process)

Fortify — Cloud-based application security solution that enables customers to automate and accelerate their application security testing needs for static, dynamic and mobile applications

Hashicorp Vault — Secures, stores, and tightly controls access to tokens, passwords, certificates, API keys, and other secrets in modern computing

Note: Phase One of this project is expected to be completed by October 2018

Based in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area, RestonLogic is a cloud-systems integrator that executes flexible, purpose-built, secure and cost-effective solutions that automate, streamline and migrate assets in the cloud.
