DECATUR, Ga. - Sept. 13, 2018 - PRLog -- Estate & Asset Protection Attorney, Victoria Collier informs veterans about tax refunds owed to more than 133,000 injured veterans who paid taxes on their severance payments extending back to 1991.

DECATUR, GA, September 13, 2018: Victoria L. Collier, founder of The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm, has posted a new blog on her law firm's website entitled "More Than 133,000 Injured Veterans Eligible For Over $78 Million In Tax Refunds." Ms. Collier, a veteran herself, keeps tabs on important news that will benefit fellow veterans and the information she shares in her latest blog certainly qualifies.

Collier writes, "As a Veteran and an attorney who works with veterans, I keep my readers informed when any new laws are enacted that will affect veterans." She continues adding, "In 2016, a law known as the Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act was passed. This law entitles more than 133,000 injured veterans to tax refunds as far back as 1991." She elaborates further, "The objective of the law is to ensure that veterans who suffer service-ending combat-related injuries aren't taxed on the severance payment they receive from the Department of Defense (DOD)."

According to Collier, "The DOD is just beginning to send letters to the eligible veterans with information explaining how to claim the tax refunds.  According to an article (https://www.accountingtoday.com/news/combat-injured-veter...) posted on accountingtoday.com, "The letters will provide an explanation of a simplified method for claiming the refund."

"There are a couple of ways you can claim the refund," says Collier. She explains, "You can either send in a claim based on the actual amount of the disability severance payment received by filling out Form 1040X (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf). You must carefully follow the instructions. Or you can opt for a simplified method which is the easiest way."
