He also released an EP, Walkin' Back, in 2011, and single, LA Trip in 2014, which is available on iTunes and Spotify. Oates is also known for his smooth rhythms. He uses the volume and tone controls on his guitar to achieve a "wah-wah" effect with the use of tone control, as he creates various distorted sounds. In 2018, he co-founded Rock Your Business LLC with Michelle Fox. They launched corporate team building, and leadership training events powered by Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp. Upon graduation, he attended the high-tech industry at Singer, Memorex, and Ampex—prior to co-founding Oracle Corporation with Larry Ellison and Bob Miner, in 1977. Oates decided to retire from Oracle to pursue his passion in music and the music industry with Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp. During his college years, he formed a rock band, The Beggar's Opera, with Warren Hallila, Rex Chappell, Tracy Chappell, and the late John Lee. In the 1990's, The Beggar's Opera disbanded; the current line of CHOC'D includes: Chappell, Hallila, Oates, Chappell, and Doug, with the addition of Doug Nichols on keyboards.
