As a major hurricane heads for the East Coast, many supermarkets and food retailers are preparing for the storm.

With the announcement of Hurricane Florence on her way, possibly touching land early on Saturday, September 15, retailers are experiencing high demand for water, bread, batteries and milk.

Since Monday, there has been a flurry of consumers stocking up on supplies in preparation for the coming storm, many getting what they can before stores close. Some stores on the Carolina and Virginia coasts have already announced closures as of Tuesday, according to Winsight Grocery Business.

Hurricane Florence is considered a Category 4 storm and one of the strongest storms on the Eastern seaboard in decades, with winds of 130 mph. The storm is expected to approach the coast, between South Carolina and North Carolina on Friday, where the force of the hurricane winds will be felt before it makes landfall on Saturday between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington with a swell that will reach more than 10 feet tall, as reported by the National Hurricane Center.

"This will likely be the storm of a lifetime," the National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina said.
