What You Need To Know About Microplastics In Your Water
By: The Water Cooler Company
Microplastics have been found in water around the world, but what exactly are they?
Well, those little beads in your soap or shower gel are part of the problem. But these are not the only microplastics. Mechanical and natural forces cause the plastic to break down over time. This plastic never completely disappears. It breaks down to a micro level, then the particles enter on water supply.
Why are Microplastics a problem?
Microplastic particles are small enough, in most cases, to be carried by the wind. This allows them to enter bodies of water, usually the ocean or our dams and rivers. This has a direct impact on us as these microparticles can make it through most filtration processes and into our drinking water. The second major impact is when the microplastics are ingested by marine life. The impact is not quite yet fully documented, however, these plastic particles have been found in fish and other marine life bound for human consumption.
What's being done?
Cutting down single-use plastic usage is a good start on the behalf of consumers. Global corporations and lawmakers are following suit by implementing changes and establishing regulations with regards to the types and quantities of plastic used.
