Maine Seaweed is a truly remarkable rich, healthy and renewable resource.  Although there are over 250 species of sea vegetables (marine macroalgae or seaweed) in the Gulf of Maine, only about 15 are commercially harvested.  Planet Botanicals uses 5 species of seaweed in our proprietary formulations. Seaweed is an ideal ingredient for firming the skin with anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and moisturizing benefits which help improve the appearance of the skin, inhibit collagen breakdown, sooth sensitive skin and help retain the skin's moisturization levels.

Seaweed has been used in bath, body and skincare products for many years because it is rich in over 60+ sea bioactives such as mineral salts, amino acids, anti-oxidants and Vitamins A, C, B1, B12, E, K and D.  The lipids, protein, mineral and vitamins contained in seaweed are easily absorbed into the skin and they are a great benefit for maintaining healthy and vibrant skin.

Michele Gilfoil, the founder of Planet Botanicals and who is from Maine, created a sample seaweed body cream and gave it to friends and family who loved the effects on their skin due to the beneficial effects of seaweed and high quality of the ingredients. Thus, the "Seaweed Beauty Collection" was created and the Seaweed Dream Cream quickly became a best seller. The Collection also includes artisan-made seaweed bar soaps, hand cream and a Voyager travel kit. All of the seaweed is hand-harvested in Maine in a sustainable way to protect this renewable resource.

Michele is a member of the Maine Seaweed Council and speaks at various local events about the history of Maine seaweed, the sustainable methods to harvest seaweed and the wonderful benefits of this natural resource.

Michele Gilfoil started Planet Botanicals because she could not find high quality natural and healthy skincare products and started to make her own products. Serendipitously, on a trip to Africa with her sister, she met a women's shea butter cooperative and discovered the incredible properties of shea butter and the deep traditional knowledge and skill of the women who produced this artisan shea butter.

Michele thought of a new idea: create a strong collaborative relationship with these women and other sustainable harvesters around the world to source fresh high-quality ingredients. She recognized the significance of working with producers who have strong traditional knowledge of plants and who receive a fair equitable share of their production. She also believed that having full transparency to the source of production would ensure quality and freshness and these ingredients were grown in a sustainable organic way.

Michele received her BA in Mathematics from the University of Vermont, Master of Arts degree from the Columbia University School of International Affairs and a Master of Science in Financial Engineering from Columbia University. Michele has built a successful banking career with several of the leading financial institutions in New York City before starting Planet Botanicals.
