-- Dr. John A. Schmidt, Jr., internist and one of the sponsors of the Fairway Mews 2018 Benefit Golf Outing, was called into action on Saturday, August 4, 2018. As a resident of Fairway Mews, Dr. Schmidt attended the dinner after the outing with his wife, Dr. Rita Watson, a retired cardiologist. Suddenly, a fellow guest and neighbor had labored breathing. Dr. Schmidt ran to his car, retrieved two stethoscopes, and handed one to his wife. They examined their neighbor together and determined that she was dehydrated.
"I was glad that we were at the dinner and able to help," states Dr. Schmidt. "It is a scary situation when you experience or witness difficulty breathing. In this case, the distress was caused by a preexisting condition. The woman let us now about her medical issue and we were able to provide her with water to relieve her symptoms. Before long, she was happily enjoying dinner with the rest of the guests."
Dr. Schmidt, a board-certified internist, received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He interned and completed his residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Schmidt then studied for five years at the National Institutes of Health, first as an officer in the Public Health Service working in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; and then as a fellow of the Arthritis Foundation in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
