WASHINGTON - Aug. 16, 2018 - PRLog -- It ranks fifth among cancer deaths among women, according to American Cancer Society statistics. Although a quick Google search calls the disease "rare," the Mayo Clinic said that ovarian cancer "often goes undetected until it has spread within the pelvis and belly."

But the Washington, D.C.-based chapter of Ovarian Cycle is on a mission to eliminate this often symptom-free, life-threatening disease.

LEAP Foundation DC has long been a supporter of organizations that aim to address the key needs of disadvantaged youth and families in the District of Columbia. The nonprofit often partners with other groups in an effort to maximize its mission to "bridge the gap between hope and achievement."

"Aiding in the research and prevention of ovarian cancer is one way that we feel our mission is being met," said Dr. Clayton Lawrence, LEAP Foundation DC president and CEO. "We are very grateful for Camelia Mazard for bringing our two organizations together for such an important cause and all of her philanthropic efforts she engages tirelessly for the underserved."

Mazard, who practices law as a partner with Doyle, Barlow & Mazard, PLLC, introduced the two for the kick-off of Ovarian Cycle DC's sixth annual indoor cycle fundraiser event, set for Nov. 3 at the VIDA-the Yards. Co-chairs Nicole Streeter and Blair Mann, along with immediate past Chair Amanda Melillo, hosted the fundraiser on Aug. 8 to begin raising the profile of ovarian cancer. Several events are planned that will lead up to the big day, including Pilates classes and another evening soiree.

With rides scheduled across the country in the coming months, the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance aims to "foster an environment that provides the best possible healthcare and support for women with ovarian cancer and those who could be at risk," according to ocrfa.org. Taking part in the rides, which include those honoring a loved one, ovarian cancer survivors, individuals and groups, allows the organization to reach far and wide.

The Social Sightings section of the Washington Informer newspaper recently featured the local kick-off event, which shared the personal connection of some of its supporters.

"Nicole, Blair and Amanda became involved with the event as the result of personal loss from ovarian cancer: Nicole lost her mother just four years ago; Blair lost her grandmother; and Amanda lost her mother to ovarian cancer five years after diagnosis," the publication said.

"As a physician, I am committed to providing only the best care for patients at our medical facilities and as the president and CEO of LEAP Foundation DC, I am on a mission to help eradicate the challenges that not only face the disadvantaged, but those who struggle with health concerns, as well," Dr. Lawrence said.

Driven by a mentality of servant leadership, Lawrence Executive Alliance of Professionals (LEAP), LLC, has been providing superior quality healthcare for active duty, veteran and civilian patients since 2007. Dr. Clayton Lawrence, a decorated and respected veteran of the United States Army, saw the need for a company that would operate with a new philosophy to bring forth excellence in the healthcare industry. Staffing medical facilities across the country with physicians, health educators, medical examiners and more, LEAP has been recognized with several awards of excellence and is certified by the Small Business Administration. Winning the Washington Business Journal Minority Business Leader Award for 2014 was just the beginning of much-deserved recognition for positive changes in the District of Columbia and across the nation. Dr. Lawrence and LEAP, LLC, were selected as the 2015 Washington, D.C., Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Person of the Year. In 2016, Dr. Lawrence was honored when he was entered into The Congressional Record for his work in business and civic leadership throughout the greater Washington, D.C., region and abroad. Later that year, he received a White House Letter of Commendation from President Barack Obama for his work with LEAP, LLC.  LEAP, LLC's nonprofit partner organization, LEAP Foundation DC, has been building bridges between hope and achievement in the District of Columbia and the surrounding communities since 2009. The group works to address the unmet social and health needs of the area's people and, among other accolades, was recognized in 2014 with the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit Award.
