Follow on Google News | Dr. Kanani of Vancouver, B.C. Advises What to Do When Braces Cause Mouth SoresAre you suffering from a painful canker mouth sore or ulcer while wearing braces? Here's help from a trusted Langley orthodontist.
By: Vancouver Orthodontics Cold Sores vs. Canker Sores: Know the Difference Some people confuse the two, as they both appear around the mouth. However, cold sores are a form of herpes virus, and they usually appear around the lips, whereas canker sores are more commonly inside mouth, including inside the lips, on the tongue or roof of the mouth, and on the inside of your cheeks. Cold sores are also contagious upon contact, while canker sores result from irritation to the delicate tissues in one's mouth, and tend to come on when your mouth is most sensitive--while the immune system is suppressed or the patient is pregnant. Dental Wax and Medicated Mouthwash When you wear braces, the metal wires on this oral appliance can be something to get used to. The feeling of something new in your mouth can be quite jarring both mentally and physically. Many people tend to run their tongue over their braces, which can cause it to become ulcerated. Also, the new sensation of friction against your cheeks can cause mouth ulcers, especially at first. Dr. Kanani advises the use of dental wax. You can obtain it at any store next to the floss and toothpaste or at the dental office. To use, simply warm up a small amount between your fingers and apply to the affected area. This will lubricate your mouth and prevent uncomfortable rubbing between your orthodontics and oral tissues. Also, rinse your mouth with a peroxide-based mouthwash to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria at the site of the sore. This is also available over the counter at any supermarket. With time, the tissues inside your mouth will toughen up, so that the sensation of metal and wires against them will no longer bring on a mouth sore or ulcer quite so easily. To Avoid Mouth Sores in the Future Our Langley Orthodontist advises you to stay away from foods that are known to cause irritation: very dry toast, pretzels, and other foods with lots of sharp edges. These can break through the tissue inside your mouth, making it fertile ground for a sore, and inviting bacteria to grow. Also, when playing sports, especially contact sports, ask your orthodontist about mouthguards to make sure that if there is any kind of impact upon your face and mouth, your wires do not cause damage to your tongue, gums, and cheeks.
