Higher language pupils at Glenalmond College score record results

Glenalmond College has achieved an outstanding 100% pass rate at grade C and above for language Highers after re-introducing the SQA qualifications into the curriculum as an option for all pupils for the first time since the turn of the century.

CRIEFF, Scotland - Aug. 9, 2018 - PRLog -- Previously Glenalmond has focused on the English GCSE and A Level system and at the start of last year's academic session brought back sixteen subjects at SQA Higher.

The move allows Lower Sixth pupils the opportunity to gain additional qualifications and UCAS points no longer available under the new A Level system. The recent A Level reforms mean that marks and UCAS points can no longer be achieved at AS level.

The performance by Glenalmond pupils has signalled a strong start for the initiative. The school has outperformed the national averages, particularly in French where pupils achieved 67% at A grade when the national average is 43%; 91% at A-B grade, compared to 68% national average; and 100% at A-C grade, against a national average of 87%.

Commenting on the results, Steve Smith, Head of Sixth Form at Glenalmond; said:

"This is fantastic news for our Lower Sixth pupils, all of whom were studying for a Higher Language qualification whilst completing three A Levels. Having this extra qualification will go a long way towards helping them stand out from the crowd and makes them very attractive university candidates. Having this curriculum flexibility is allowing pupils to gain a career-enhancing language skill whilst pursuing their core A-level choices.  It offers breadth that has been traditionally associated with the International Baccalaureate, but Glenalmond pupils are not tied into a two-year programme."

Glenalmond Warden (Head) Elaine Logan said:

"I am delighted with the Higher results this year. It is clear evidence of the College's determination to achieve the best academic results and pathways into tertiary education for our pupils.'
